Shroud Cay - part of the Exuma Land and Sea Park
Aah! Powdered Sugar Sand
We decided to move on to Shroud Cay. Shroud Cay is an island that is part of the Exuma Land and Sea Park. We had not visited it last year. It is an island that is like a cup, with higher ground around the rim, and marsh and mangroves in the middle. Then there are some “chips” in the rim of the cup with creeks that allow you to enter in a dinghy and explore the inside of the island.
It was really beautiful and peaceful. I felt like Katherine Hepburn with Bob as Humphrey Bogart in the”African Queen.”
Saturday, we explored the island and took a creek all the way across to the Sound side of the island.

Cruising through the creeks
The entrance to the creek from the sound side is partially blocked by a sand bar, so the creek is not terribly affected by the waves from the sound. We climbed atop a hill, which has an interesting past. At one time in the 60’s, a man had lived on a sailboat in the creek and had made a stairway of sorts up to the top of this hill. He then made “furniture” and statues there made of driftwood. Unfortunately, the wind has pretty much taken that all away. Then in the 80’s, this location was used to watch the traffic going in and out of Norman’s Cay by drug traffickers. Over time, they had the tail numbers of all the planes and had the entire operation mapped out before shutting them down.
Visitor who stayed too long at Camp Driftwood
The view from there of the sound on one side and the beautiful creeks through the island on the other was certainly worth the hike up. Someone had put a fake skeleton at the top, or maybe it was a visitor who stayed too long.
