Staniel Cay #4

On Thursday, the winds were finally quiet enough that we could try to snorkel the famous Thunderball Cave. It was not as big as I had pictured it from the movie, but still fascinating. You need to enter at low tide. Some fools decided to jump in from the holes in the ceiling of the cave to the water below. That couldn’t be more dangerous as sharp edged rocks surrounded the water, but hey, the laws here are different. At least they had some spotters inside keeping people out of the fall area.

We had been told to take Ziploc bags of frozen peas and corn and stale bread and that the fish would swarm us, which they did. Unfortunately, I did not understand how the underwater camera worked in time to get some good photos. I wouldn’t have been able to post them until I got back and got them developed anyway.

On Friday, about all we had the energy for was to have lunch at the restaurant and sit by the pool. Kathy had been a good sport with all the fish, but she was longing for a cheeseburger which she had for lunch. She got her “cheeseburger in paradise”!

All the guests in the cottages, and the boaters at the marina seemed to congregate at the pool in the afternoon. We discovered that the Bar served a Mango Rum Slush drink that was just the ticket by the pool.

Donn on Falcon had a rough encounter with an anchor windless. He had been flown to Ft. Lauderdale for plastic surgery. His follow-up was Thursday and the news at the pool on Friday was that the finger was healing. We were all happy to hear that for him.

We met Scott and Kathy on Saturday for breakfast and to see them off on their flight. From the number of passengers waiting, it looked like they would be on the nine passenger aircraft that Watermaker Air has. That should be a more comfortable trip for Scott who had knee surgery last year.

Kathy agreed with me that the photos on the blog don’t do the Bahamas justice. You just can’t capture that much beauty in a photo.

Bob and I realized how much fun it was to have them here and share in the experience with us.

Those of you looking for a great place to vacation, Staniel Cay is an experience you would long remember. The cottages are sparse, but adequate, the food great, and the beauty spectacular. If you get one of the packages with a small boat included, you can explore all the little islands around Staniel Cay (weather permitting), have the beaches all to yourselves, and snorkel the reefs. You might even see a movie star or two. While we were there, John Cusack arrived with a group and boarded one the ships at the dock.

We will continue our trip North now, slowly toward home. We hope to see some of the places we just stopped at on the way down in a little more depth.
